KITAS explained: which stay permit is right for you?

Immigration · June 2026 · 6 min read

If you want to live in Indonesia for more than a short visit, a tourist visa won't take you far. What you need is a KITAS (Kartu Izin Tinggal Terbatas) — a limited stay permit that lets you reside here legally for a longer period. But there isn't just one KITAS; there are several types, each tied to a reason for staying. Choosing the right one matters, because it shapes what you're allowed to do once you're here.

The main KITAS types

Investor KITAS

For foreigners who hold shares in an Indonesian PT PMA. It's popular because it generally doesn't require a separate work permit fee structure the way an employment KITAS does, and it can come with a longer validity. It's a natural fit if you've set up a company in Indonesia and want to be based here to run or oversee it.

Work KITAS (employment)

For foreigners employed by an Indonesian company in a specific role. It's tied to a work permit (RPTKA/IMTA) sponsored by the employer, and to a defined position. If you're being hired by a company here, this is usually your route.

Retirement KITAS

For older foreigners (subject to an age threshold) who want to retire in Indonesia and can meet the income or financial requirements. It doesn't permit working, but it's a straightforward way to settle here for those who qualify.

Family / spouse KITAS

For foreigners married to an Indonesian citizen, or dependents of a KITAS holder. A spouse KITAS lets you reside based on the marriage; in some cases it allows limited work rights, which should be confirmed for your situation.

Visa categories, age thresholds, and financial requirements are set by immigration regulation and change from time to time. Always confirm the current rules for your specific case before applying.

From KITAS to KITAP

After holding a KITAS for a qualifying period, many foreigners become eligible for a KITAP (Kartu Izin Tinggal Tetap) — a permanent stay permit with longer validity and fewer renewals. It's the natural next step for those planning to stay long term.

Don't forget local registration

Once you have your stay permit and an address, you'll typically also need local reporting such as an SKTT (residence registration). These small steps matter — they're often what's needed to do practical things like buy a vehicle or open certain accounts.
